Face frames are incredibly common in modern furniture and cabinets. They can dress up a simple plywood carcass giving it a much more visually substantial appearance. The pieces used for the face frame are typically only about 1 1/2″ wide and where vertical pieces meet horizontal pieces, some sort of joinery is usually needed.
